Hiroto Kobayashi

Architect. Professor at the Graduate School of Media and Governance at Keio University. Studied architectural and urban design at Kyoto University and the Harvard Graduate School of Design (Harvard GSD). Gained professional experience in design at Nikken Sekkei and Foster + Partners. Principal of Kobayashi Maki Design Workshop (KMDW) since 2003. Japan representative of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM). Visiting associate at Harvard GSD from 2003 to 2005. Visiting associate professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from 2011 to 2012. Visiting scholar at the Center for Japanese Studies at the University of California, Berkeley from 2012 to 2013. Received a doctorate in design from Harvard GSD for his research on the traditional Japanese communal unit known as cho. In addition to conducting design activities in and outside Japan, he is currently developing easy-to-assemble self-build veneer buildings as part of the Veneer House Project he initiated following the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami. He is also researching how sustainable communities can be passed on intact when cities undergo renewal.
