Born 1925 in Tokyo, Japan. Graduated from the Tokyo Imperial University. Worked at the Ministry of Communications before becoming a professor at the University of Tokyo, a professor at Meiji University, a specially appointed professor at the Kanazawa College of Art, a member of the Japan Academy, and the president of the Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ). Works include the Chuo Denki Tsushin Gakuen Hall (1956), Saga Prefectural Museum (1970), Saga Prefectural Kyushu Ceramic Museum (1980), Musashi Academy Campus Redevelopment (1980–2002), and the Osaka Gas Experimental Collective Housing NEXT 21 (1993). Awards include the Prize of the AIJ (Architectural Design Division in 1970 and 1982 and Research Thesis Division in 1977) and the Grand Prize of the AIJ (1996). Publications include Tsukuttari kangaetari [Building and Thinking*] and Kenchiku no seisan to shisutemu [Architectural Production and Systems*] (SUMAI Library).
